This old variety of eggplant was introduced on the market around the 1910s. It produces abundant and early dark veiled fruits, pear-shaped, measuring about 15 cm. This variety has known through the ages and is still found more than 100 years after its appearance commonly in the vegetable gardens of amateur gardeners.

This variety of spinach is hardy and slow to bolt. Its large dark green triangular leaves can be eaten raw or cooked. The leaves are harvested as needed. Lettuce Grosse Blonde Paresseuse. Mentioned by Vilmorin, a French seed company, in 1904, this old variety produces a beautiful large head of a beautiful blond green. It is hardy, and does not go to seed easily. It's crunchy to the bite, and has given us a great harvest this summer.

The Ferland family bean is an ancestral yellow flat climbing bean, preserved by René Paquet of Heritage Seeds. Coming from Saints-Anges, they were given to Mr. Gérard Parent in 2001 by Mrs. Carmelle Boily Ferland (1916-2015), the having previously received from her parents (Cleophas Boily and Demerise Turmel). According to Mr. Paquet, having received them from Mr. Parent, they date from before 1900. The pods are eaten fresh, even at an advanced level of maturity, or as a legume. Request a tutor.

Red speckled romaine lettuce. It is the sweetest in our collection. In 1997, during a tasting competition, the Forellenschluss received 1st prize among 900 other varieties of lettuce. Reine des glaces lettuce is a bicentennial variety originating in France and often sold under the names Ice Queen and Queen of Ices in North America; Queen of the Ices in the UK; and Regina delle Ghiacciole in Italy. It is a batavia lettuce; its leaves are toothed, wavy, crunchy and have a sweet taste. This variety grows quickly and tolerates heat well; it does not develop a bitter taste and does not bolt easily. It also tolerates the first snowfalls well, which makes it very versatile. After the first harvest as an apple, you can continue to cut the fresh leaves.

These large mottled red and brown beans were grown in most Iroquoian communities, also called Haudenosaunee. They were shared with us by the Mohawk. Any First Nations person is welcome to ask us for free.

Here is a dark pink tomato that originates from the bottom of the St. Lawrence River and more specifically from Rivière-du-Loup. The seeds come from Madame Francine Mailloux. She gave some to Mr. René Paquet, who presented them to Michel Richard from the Potager d'Antan, who gave them to me. And you'll soon have them in your garden! At a Seed Festival, I sat next to a friendly-looking old man. Soon we started discussing seeds and commenting on our purchases and finds! This is how a beautiful friendship was born that lasted more than ten years. This batavia-type head lettuce has light green foliage spotted with red, slightly wavy like a jester's costume. Its leaves are crunchy and tasty and the plant is very vigorous. Developed by Frank Morton in Oregon, it has both taste and aesthetic qualities. It comes from a triple cross involving “Reine des Glaces”, “Merlot” and “Flashy Troutback”.

**CAN'T BE SHIPPED OUTSIDE CANADA**When the Maison des Jésuites de Sillery, Quebec, began renovations, the gardener became concerned about the loss of a clump of garlic that had been growing there for years. He saved some bulblets that he took to Seeds of Diversity Canada. During the summer, we grew it. What was our surprise to see that the bulbils gave a large bulb of white garlic the first summer, and even a flower of garlic in September!
